My Story

Shelby was born in Modesto, California, but raised in Allen, Oklahoma. One year after graduating from college, Shelby moved to Sacramento, California, where they currently reside. While still in high school, Shelby studied AP political and communication courses through Junior Statesmen of America at Princeton University and Stanford University. After high school, they graduated from East Central University with honors in Mass Communications and Vocal Music Education.

Shelby published their first poem at the age of 12 after submitting it to an online contest for young artists and published their next piece during their freshman year of high school in a state contest. Shelby continued to earn awards for their writing through academic contests in high school and university, placing in contests for individual poems and short stories. They have written scripts for social media influencers, helped write and produce a YouTube series, and in December 2021, Shelby published their first full book, Laconic: A Collection of Illustrated Poems.

Shelby’s main genres at this time are Poetry, Young Adult, and Fantasy.

Shelby has always loved reading and writing, but their drive to pursue it comes from their high school English teachers, Kari Arthur, author of Bloom Where You’re Planted, and David Nobles, founder of Allen Oklahoma’s Junior Statesmen Chapter. The two mentors dedicated their time and care to Shelby’s education and passions and have continued to do so.

Laconic is available on the Barnes & Noble website and on Shelby’s author website, where they also share tidbits of works in progress, photos, announcements, and more!

When Shelby isn’t working on their next piece, they explore their community and support local organizations, such as A Seat At The Table Books in Elk Grove, California, and the Sacramento Mutual Resource.
